Frequently Asked Questions
What is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy is a holistic and evidence-based healthcare profession that helps individuals to participate in meaningful and necessary activities (or “occupations”). These occupations include everything from basic self-care activities such as toileting, bathing, or dressing to higher level daily activities such as managing medications, caring for loved ones or animals, housework, or engaging in a specific work or leisure activity. OTs facilitate optimal functioning by maximizing their client’s own capacities as well as adapting the environment and aspects of the activity.
What is the difference between rehabilitation and habilitation?
Habilitative services are used to help individuals maintain, improve, or learn new skills and functioning for daily living. Rehabilitative services are used to help individuals restore or improve skills and functioning for daily living which have been lost or impaired due to an illness, injury, surgery, or disability.
What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is an evidence-based, systems-oriented, individualistic approach to healthcare that addresses the root cause of disease and impairment. Health is viewed as a product of the interaction between genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental exposures. Emphasis is not placed exclusively on management of symptoms and chronic disease but rather on individual interventions that target the underlying factors.
